Environment: Post-Mining Reclamation
Whenever CF Industries conducts phosphate mining operations, it reclaims the land, guided by a commitment to restore the land for future generations. In fact, the process starts long before the first shovel of dirt is moved.
Prior to mining, CF surveys the land and thoroughly investigates and documents its natural characteristics, including plant life, wildlife, hydrology, and even archeological sites. Next step is a lengthy and extensive process to obtain all needed regulatory permits.
As mining activities proceed, the company works to protect the condition of nearby wetlands and to maintain the integrity and functionality of key habitats. Once mining activities are completed, the land is contoured and native plants are reintroduced. Then CF Industries monitors the condition and success of the newly reclaimed ecosystem. Eventually the land is released; it can then be returned for a variety of productive uses.
Reclaimed wetlands can also provide significant habitat for waterfowl.
