CF Industries' nitrogen complex at Donaldsonville, LA is North America’s largest and, in many respects, its most flexible nitrogen operation. It can produce and ship approximately 5 million tons of nitrogen for agricultural and industrial uses each year.
Originally built in the 1960s, the Donaldsonville complex has undergone significant expansion and modernization since then. Today, it produces anhydrous ammonia, urea, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution, the three most used nitrogen products. The complex ships these products by pipeline, barge, rail, and truck, serving agricultural and other customers directly and via the company’s vast in-market distribution network.

Donaldsonville’s location provides numerous advantages, including access to low-cost river and other transportation modes, abundant supplies of natural gas (the primary raw material used to produce ammonia, the basic nitrogen product), and availability of a committed, trained work force.
The complex is more than just a manufacturing complex. With three docks on the Mississippi River and extensive product handling and storage capabilities, it has a unique “make versus buy” capability. As a result, CF Industries can respond quickly to market conditions by supplementing or replacing a portion of its manufacturing capacity with purchased product.
As a result of CF Industries’ acquisition of Terra Industries Inc. in 2010, Terra’s adjacent facility, which operates an ammonia manufacturing plant, will be folded into the company’s Donaldsonville complex.
